Beeste is the Afrikaans word for cattle, and this Syrah hails from a farm high on Swartland’s Kasteelberg mountain, sharing the steep, stony slopes with Africa’s famously skinny Nguni cattle. And just like the cattle this wine is about the bones of the beast, not the flesh. There’s no jam and no flabbiness; its skinny, structured stuff with breadth, texture and a charmingly rustic gait. 100% naturally fermented partially in old wooden barrels. More similar in style to the northern Rhone than anything from Australia, this wine works wonderfully well with game.
