Tenuta San Leonardo is best known for its Bordeaux-inflected red, but this Riserva Privata is a reminder that the estate has serious range. Made by the Guerrieri Gonzaga family in the Trento DOC — Italy’s benchmark appellation for Metodo Classico sparkling wine — this is a prestige cuvée that has spent several years on its lees before disgorgement, building the kind of depth and complexity that most Champagne houses charge considerably more to achieve.
The 2018 vintage in Trentino was warm and expressive, giving the wine generous ripe fruit to balance its mountain acidity. We find it drinking very well right now: brioche, lemon curd, almond, and a fine chalky mineral thread that runs from nose to finish.
