Mas de Daumas Gassac Blanc is one of France’s great white wine eccentrics — a field blend of something like twenty grape varieties, dominated by Viognier, planted in the Hérault by Aimé Guibert in the early 1970s after geologist Henri Enjalbert declared the valley’s glacial soils extraordinary. The result was a wine that confounded the Languedoc’s then-humble reputation and earned the estate its inevitable nickname: the Grand Cru of the Midi.
The white is altogether different in character from the famous red — more aromatic, more complex in structure, and rather more surprising on first encounter.
