… I tasted Domaine Evremond’s spectacular ‘Edition 2 ‘, which in itself is a stunning , expansive and unmistakably grand wine. It is hard to believe, but it builds considerably on the first release, and I can’t explain why or how it has gathered so much finesse.

  • Jancis Robinson, September 2026, Score: 17/20

?Second release of this Taittinger project in Kent, this time 80% based on the cooler, wetter 2021 vintage rather than the 2020. Rounded out by some 2020 and a little 2019. A bit more Pinot Noir this time, 65% rather than the debut release’s 55%. Chardonnay portion reduced from 35% to 25%. Each cuvée contains 10% Pinot Meunier, is aged three years on lees and has a dosage of 7 g/l, but of course this second edition has presumably benefited from a year’s more vine age. Surprisingly rich, creamy nose – a nod to Comtes de Champagne?! Much broader than Edition I, arguably less refreshing in fact, but a wine for food perhaps? (It’s not to be released for a few months.) So ripe, I’m not sure I would guess it was English if served it blind. The nose is already quite complex – amazingly so for an unreleased wine!

  • AK, September 2026, Score: 91

The NV Brut Classic Cuvée Edition II is the second release of this Champenois-English project spearheaded by Taittinger. It is an estate-grown blend of 65% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier, with 80% based on the 2021 vintage. Exquisite purity of fruit introduces the nose, which displays tart Mirabelle plums, lemon, white peach and pear with undercurrents of fresh cream and lemony sponge cake. The palate is equally vivid – light, svelte and pure but full-flavored with fine mousse supporting its light-footed elegance. This will undoubtedly benefit from some more bottle age. Drink 2026-2030.

Producer

Domaine Evremond

A landmark Franco-British collaboration, Domaine Evremond is the result of a partnership between Champagne Taittinger and Hatch Mansfield, bringing traditional Champagne savoir-faire to the rolling chalk soils of Kent. Named after Charles de Saint-Évremond, a 17th-century French poet and ambassador of Champagne to England, the estate symbolises centuries of shared wine culture between the two nations. Planted with classic Champagne varieties—Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier—the estate spans over 40 hectares near Chilham in Kent, where the cool climate and chalk terroir provide the ideal conditions for producing high-quality English sparkling wine. With meticulous attention to viticulture and winemaking, Domaine Evremond’s wines are crafted with the same commitment to finesse, balance, and age-worthiness. The result is a beautifully elegant expression of English terroir, rooted in tradition but looking to the future.

Region

England

England is fast becoming a rich source of high quality sparkling wines, many of which are making waves on the international scene. The chalky Kimmeridgian soil that crops up in Chablis, Sancerre, and Champagne plunges under the Channel only to resurface on the south coast of England. Grape growers in southern counties like Sussex, Kent, Hampshire, Devon and Cornwall have been making increasingly impressive cuvées using the traditional Champagne varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) and the traditional production method (second fermentation in bottle and extended ageing on lees). Ripeness is becoming an increasingly regular occurrence in this marginal climate thanks to gradually warming annual temperatures. Producers are also beginning to focus on producing still wines, but for the moment it is the high calibre of sparkling wines that are the standard bearers for the English wine industry. Their zippy acidity, fine mousse, and delicate fruit profiles are a genuinely tempting alternative to Champagne.
